Holly’s Story: My first recollection of owning a camera was my freshman year of high school and a field trip to Disneyworld. Coming from a small town, Disneyworld seemed like the Mecca of the universe. I wanted to chronicle every moment and I must have taken 40 rolls of film. From that point forward, photography was one of my passions and I always had some type of camera in hand documenting what was around me and I have boxes of photographs to proof it. Thank goodness for the digital revolution! In addition to being a photographer, I am a graphic designer and fine artist too. I paint, draw, sculpt, cut, glue; anything that might get my hands dirty. I used to tell my art teachers, “if only I could photograph what I see, I could paint it." This statement to myself finally pushed me to invest in a professional grade film camera in 1998, starting my journey towards a career in photography.
During these years of finding my way as a photographer, I actually spent 12 years in the corporate world, specifically finance. I called myself “an accountant by day, an artist by night.” I really enjoyed learning the intricacies of how a business runs and the finance department puts you in touch with the entire company. I enjoyed building employee and client relations and I gained a lot of knowledge and business savvy. After supervising various staffs and tasked to handle a wide range of managerial responsibilities, I grew confident I could run a business of my own. I finally made the leap from the corporate world to running Sutography in 2003 with my husband, partner and best friend, Mat.
I am the voice of Sutography, the director, the communicator, it’s my “Gemini” personality that naturally allows me to connect with all types of people, shy, outgoing, quiet or loud, I am ready to meet you and make you feel at ease. I have a natural passion for communicating and through photography I have learned that people respond naturally to my personality. I am a girly girl, but also easily a tomboy. I’ll fix your hair, wipe your makeup, fluff your dress, but I also not hesitate to get dirty and lay on the ground to get the best shot. I believe through photography I can make everyone feel beautiful, unique and special. My goal is to create photography that transcends the familiar, that is true, real, artistic and modern.
Mat’s Story: I will never forget my first video class in the eighth grade, circa 1988. Broadcasting 1, 2 was affectionately known by my friends and I as "bread-toasting." It was there, that I first got the spark for making humorous video shorts. My comedy exploits in video continued into high school where I was recognized by the California Student Media Festival with multiple awards for my funny and ironic short films. Realizing that there was no college that could give me the hands on education in video production that I hungered for, I dove right in and landed my first production job in 1996 at a local company shooting and editing wedding videos. Soon after, I started my own company, Mammal Productions. No, I did not work with wild animals, the word "mammal" has always just been funny to me. Where could I go from here? Well, in 2003 I married my wife Holly and our eyes for photography catapulted us into a new life adventure photographing weddings together as a husband and wife team. Sutography was born!
Okay, here is where the tech geek part of me kicks in. With the advent of digital SLR HD video capable cameras, for me, there has never been a more exciting time to be in photography and videography. I witnessed the digital revolution of video cameras first hand and narrowly escaped a dark room filled with noxious chemicals. My experience as a still photographer truly enhanced my film making skills as, it forced me to further educate myself about lenses and to scrutinize every image I snapped. Now, armed with the combined technology of photo and video, capturing beautiful, artistic, imagery has never been more true to what I want to see through the lens. My goal is to remain technically as well as artistically savvy in order to continue to deliver the stunning, thoughtful pictures and videos my clients deserve.
